A succession of disasters over several months has made a difficult year for communities along the southern coast of Java.
Earthquakes close to the university city of Yogyakarta have left in their wake grim statistics of death and destruction. Tsunamis too have caused destruction and panic around the port city of Cilacap where the indefatigable Fr Charlie Burrows OMI is based. These disasters have only served to bring out the best of his organisational ability. He and his staff have been able to channel thousands of tons of international aid to the victims. Irish Aid has granted him ?54, 651 funding to set up a motor bike and motor car repair training course for unskilled school drop-outs between the ages of 16 and 22.
