Sri Lanka
The current high-profile conflicts across the Middle East have taken the spotlight away from other war-torn parts of the world.
Sri Lanka?s 22-year old civil war between government forces and the Tamil Tigers, which appeared to have come to an end, has flared up again. There are close ties historically between Sri Lanka and the Oblate Anglo-Irish province. Recently, our province has been supporting the efforts of Sri Lankan Oblates to meet the pressing needs of people affected by war and natural disasters. Grants obtained to date from the Irish Government?s overseas aid agency, ?Irish Aid?, included one for ?44, 500 to provide a counselling centre in Jaffna for victims of civil war. The project is linked with NUI Galway for counsellor accreditation purposes.
